UltimateMama spent last weekend with the family in Washington, D.C. and Arlington, VA.  Although the visit was a short one it was chock full of sites!

UltimateMama offers up a few tips for a family friendly vacation:

– Start your day early to avoid the crowds!

– Take advantage of the Smithsonian Institutions 19 national museums and the National Zoo which are all free.  UltimateMama happened to visit the Air and Space Musuem on family day which was a treat for the kids who loved all the art projects throughout the museum.  UltimateMama arrived at the National Zoo early and was able to see all the animals and exhibits before the crowds rushed in!  Although the day was hot, the kids didn’t mind as they enjoyed the wonderful refreshing “misting” machines.  Zoo parking was only $15!

– Walk through the Hishhorn Museum’s Sculpture Garden to see modern sculptures by the masters, located next to the Air and Space Museum at The National Mall

– Put your little ones on the carousel at The National Mall– Eat at ella’s Wood Fired Pizza on 901 F Street, N.W., near The National Mall

– Enjoy a short hike in Great Falls Park, Virginia to see the falls of the Potomac River in their glory

– Pay your respects to soldiers and visit the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA

UltimateMama spent last weekend with the family in Lancaster, PA touring Amish Country.  Lancaster is perfect for kids of all ages as there are so many family friendly activities and events to take advantage of on a daily basis.

A few tips for a family friendly vacation to Amish Country in Lancaster, PA:

– Stay at the AmishView Inn & Suites.  Excellent complimentary full breakfast with waffles, eggs, omelets, bacon, sausage, cereal, fruit, oatmeal, bagels, breads, beverages, and more! Wonderful indoor pool. Clean, spacious rooms (our family took advantage of the suites). All right on a farm!

– Try the Plain & Fancy restaurant for dinner. The turkey dinner with mashed potatoes, stuffing, and cranberry sauce was AMAZING! The restaurant even has a kids menu.

– Take the family for an Amish Buggy Ride with Aaron and Jessica’s Buggy Rides.  Tour farms and learn all about Amish Country from friendly guides.

– Spend a day at Dutch Wonderland, an amusement park for kids.  This park is excellent for young children.  Parents like it because kids under the age of two are free!  My girls loved the amusement park rides — and the pony rides!

– Go early and enjoy a ride on the Strasburg Rail Road.

– Have fun with hundreds of trains at the National Toy Train Museum.

– Shop a little at the Tanger Outlet Center in Lancaster, PA

– Pick up some honey (and see the bees), jam, apple butter, and bread at Kauffman’s Fruit Farm and Market before you leave!

UltimateMama thinks Baltimore is a wonderful, kid-friendly place for the family.  Here are UltimateMama’s favorite hot spots for children:

Port Discovery  is a little Children’s Museum at the Inner Harbor.  Visit on a weekday to avoid crowds.  It offers an indoor climbing experience with a crazy slide that kids love.  Also, it has a grocery store for a “real” shopping experience — carts and all.  UltimateMama was not a fan of the water exhibit as it was a complete mess but the art room is terrific. The gas station is complete with pump and car.  Bob the Builder also makes appearances at times.

Maryland Science Center is also at the Inner Harbor and is really great for kids of all ages…and ADULTS.  There is enough to keep everyone entertained.  The offerings include a bunch of hands on activities in which children can learn about gravity/the body/motion/etc.  The gift shop is wonderful too!  There is also a planetarium.

The B&O Railroad Museum is terrific too — especially during the holidays! The holiday train exhibit is made out of legos!  More surprising are the real trains that families can walk through and explore.

And, the National Aquarium in Baltimore is so perfect for lovers of all things water!  A Polar Express 4D show is currently playing and as it is only 15 minutes long everyone will enjoy it. The dolphin show is really spirited.  And, everyone loves the jellyfish as well as the sharks.

It’s Always Fun In PHILADELPHIA

A New York Foursome Takes On History, Culture And Even A Shark In The City Of Brotherly Love

The challenge: two adults (my husband Ken and I) two young kids (our daughters, Milla, 3 and Arden, 1) and 48 hours to see it all. Here’s how we spent our weekend escape in Philadelphia.

What We Did:

The Philadelphia Trolley Works Tour

The trolley tour enabled our family to see the city’s main attractions in just 90 minutes. The tour is narrated by knowledgeable and cheerful tour guides, and you can hop off at any of the 20 stops to customize the day to your family’s interests. We enjoyed visiting attractions like the Betsy Ross House, the Rodin Museum and the iconic “Rocky Steps” at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. (phillytour.com)

Please Touch Museum

A perfect place for kids to learn and play! Our girls perused the aisles of the mini ShopRite supermarket, played with water currents in “River Adventures” and learned about transportation in “Roadside Attractions.” The museum also houses the century-old refurbished Woodside Park Dentzel Carousel. (pleasetouchmuseum.org)

Adventure Aquarium

This incredible 200,000 square-foot aquarium boasts so many exciting exhibits, shows and adventures. Our family loved the 40-foot shark tunnel, which features over 30 sharks and 850 other sea creatures. The “Touch-A- Shark” exhibit is great for those who are brave, like Milla. Where We Stayed:

The newly renovated Doubletree Hotel Philadelphia is located in the center of the city’s cultural district. Families will love the hotel’s proximity to the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts and the Academy of Music, the Pennsylvania Convention Center, the Liberty Bell and other family-friendly attractions. The rooms are chic but comfortable and offer beautiful views of the city. The hotel also has an indoor pool and whirlpool, high-speed internet access, and a warm and gracious staff that greeted us with smiles and high fives (to Arden’s delight!). UltimateMama has a simple yet effective tip for you that will make your life a lot easier if your trip gets delayed or if you are planning to arrive back home late at night.  Buy organic milk before your trip as it often has a longer expiration date compared to non-organic milk. Also, have a meal in the freezer for your family – pasta sauce, ham, meatloaf, etc.  Additionally, keep some frozen fruit in the freezer for breakfast the next day.  This way, if you arrive to your home too late to hit the grocery store you will be able to get by with a few meals!

You will thank UltimateMama when you arrive home with hungry kids late at night!

UltimateMama and her family enjoy staying in condos when on vacation. She always makes grocery lists in advance so that she can swing by the grocery store and stock up on necessities for her family before checking into her condo. That way, all she needs to do is supplement here and there as the week progresses.  Also, there is no temptation to buy unnecessary items.

By creating the grocery list a few days before she leaves for her trip she can also discuss the items on the list with her children who like to offer their input. This is a great way to involve the whole family in the process of meal-planning as well as get them excited for their upcoming vacation.

Below is a sample Grocery List for UltimateMama’s upcoming trip to Florida:

Guess what?!  Baby formula is allowed on airplanes as is breast milk. Even baby food is acceptable for air travel.  However, do yourself and everyone else in line a favor and declare all baby related items at the checkpoint right away.

For a list of acceptable items for carry-ons as well as packing tips please visit the Transportation Security Administration’s site:  http://www.tsa.gov/311/index.shtm

Do not be afraid to take a road trip with your kids.  As long as you do some necessary planning, you will enjoy your trip!  Most likely, you can always run to a store to pick up a forgotten item so do not fret.  UltimateMama wants you to be prepared when you go away with the kids for a long weekend.

UltimateMama knows that it is not easy to travel by air with young children.  Like adults, children do not like to be confined in uncomfortable seats for countless hours. The key is to minimize your children's shouting, seat kicking, and wiggling so that your family and nearby passengers have a smooth flight.

UltimateMama believes that preparation is the key to successful airline travel for families.  Go shopping a week before your trip and stock up on some fun new toys, books, or snacks for your trip.  Your children will be delighted when their new "presents" are unvealed.

After many trips, UlitmateMama has found mess free ways to occupy her children and keep nearby passengers happy!  A few tips for you:

– Make sure you bring a variety of snacks for your youngsters (bite size fruit, crackers, etc.

– Bring a few favorite books

– Pack a small coloring book and washable crayons (UltimateMama loves Crayola products such as the Color Wonder™ Coloring Pads with Color Wonder™ Markers

Junk
– Give your children a magnetic doodler or drawing screen with an easy sliding eraser

Junk
– Bring some fun stickers and a small reusable sticker book

UltimateMama wants to share a little travel tip with you – dress your kids alike (and even yourself and spouse if you wish)! Not only will you always remember what your children are wearing as they run all around the airport, train station, or rest stops but you will also easily spot them in large crowds.

UltimateMama is a big fan of picking a color for your travel day as well as selecting a similar style outfit for each family member.  For instance, if you have daughters then you may want to pick the color "pink" for their shirts.  Taking it a step further you can dress your children in pink polo shirts and jeans.  You could even sport a similar outfit which will surely put a smile on your kids faces.
